Semisolid dosage form dosage form
These are the half-solid dosage form which can be found in the form of ointments , cream , paste and gel.
Oinments ?
Ointments are preparations for exernal use, intended for application to the skin. Typically, they have an oily or greasy consistency and can appear “stiff” as they are applied to the skin. Ointments contain drug that may act on the skinor be absorbed through the skin for systemic action.
Ex - : Ketoconazole ointment , Nitroglycerine ointment , Benzocaine ointmen

Complexation
1) external use = only applied to the skin
2) stiff = chipchipa in hindi (chip chip karna)
Creams ?
Creams are the semisolid dosage form meant for external use only.

The viscous semisolid emulsion which are made for external use is known as cream

Complexation
1) viscous = substance having high viscosity.
2) emulsion = a fine dispersion of minute droplets of one liquid in another in which it is not soluble or miscible.
3) viscosity = abililty to flow. less viscous means it flow easily.

Difference in composition of water oil in semisolid dosage form
Cream – Emulsion of oil and water in approximately equal proportions.Penetrates stratum corneum outer layer of skin well.
*.Ointment– Combines oil (80%) and water (20%). Effective barrier against moisture loss.
*.Gel– Liquefies upon contact with the skin.
*.Paste– Combines three agents – oil, water, and powder; an ointment in which a powder is suspended.
Properties of ointment and ideal ointment
1) These are semisolid preparation meant for application to the skin
2) it contains medicaments dissolved in ointment phase
3) it may contain a suitable antimicrobial preservative
4) The ointment which are made for application to the eye are called as Ofarmake ointment. these are sterile and purely free from microorganism
Ideal ointment bases character
1) It should be enough and smooth
2) It should not produce irritation to the skin
3) It should not be physically and chemically stable.
